Tommy Mauney &
Danny Blankenship Racing Win Quick 8 Outlaws
Race at Orangeburg

(08-02-2010) ORANGEBURG, SC
– Even though it took two days to finish the Quick 8 Outlaws race at
Orangeburg Drag Strip no one could stop the pair of Danny Blankenship
and Tommy Mauney. Danny asked Tommy to shoe his ‘40 Ford because of a
family commitment. These two have proven in the past that when they
are together, they are a dangerous duo.
“Everybody thinks that this car has a good tune up in the heat,”
Mauney said “When we get to run this car when it cools down, it’ll
really show them what it runs what it will really run. I mean this car
ain’t no 3.95 car. It’s a 3.89 or 88 car and that’s with the
powerglide. We’ve got a really good tune up for this car. It’s a lot
like the set up that we had in Danny’s ‘41 Willys and his purple
Corvette.”
With the second and final round of qualifying complete Blankenship’s
red ‘40 with Tommy Mauney behind the wheel sat atop the sheet with a
3.960 at 183.29. Reigning Quick 8 Outlaws champion Troy Jordan was 2nd
with a 4.060 at 180.65. The quickest Nitrous assisted Doorslammer in
the field was the current point’s leader Shay Loveday with a 4.081 at
177.72 that got the 3rd spot. Quick 8 Outlaws President Ric Fleck
qualified his Pro Charger equipped Corvette 4th with a 4.103 at
179.35. Coming from the 5th slot was Dwayne “the Hogfarmer” Silance
with a 4.111 at 178.71. Former Quick 8 Outlaws Champion Dennis Jordan
qualified 6th with a 4.136 at 1754.35. Kenny Kneece qualified the
Joker’s Wild Vette 7th with a 4.160. Steve Bray put his Ford Mustang
in the 8th spot with a career best 4.181 at 173.14.
Robbie Matthews who finished 2nd in points last year qualified Kip
Kauffman’s Blown ‘57 Chevy in the 9th position with a 4.232 at 171.89.
Coming out of the 10th spot was Shawn Jenkins with his 4.259 at
169.42. The “She Devil” Carol Long posted a 4.497 at 144.0 to get the
11th spot. The 12th qualifier was “Wild Bill” DeSoto with a 4.547 at
131.23. Chris Wooten qualified his slammed to ground ‘69 Camaro 13th
with a 4.620 at 151.31. Ervin Rose posted a 5.085 at 135.91. Anchoring
the field in the 15th slot was James Linton Jr with a 6.888 at 53.09.
When it was time to start the first round of eliminations, there were
several cars that had a bye run. They were Tommy Mauney, Bill DeSoto,
Steve Bray and Ervin Rose. Ric Fleck and Carol Long was the next pair
up. This was Ric’s race from the start. He posted a 4.186 at
178.163.45. Dennis Jordan defeated Chris Wooten with a 4.131 at 176.19
to Chris’ 4.601 at 151.72. Next up was a pair of ‘63 Corvettes, Shay
Loveday and Shawn Jenkins. Shawn had a problem his Nitrous while Shay
posted an impressive 4.087 at 178.00. Troy Jordan and Robbie Matthews
were the final pair in the first round. Robbie ran into tire shake
while Troy posted the quickest pass of the first round, a 4.061 at
181.89.
That was all the racing that anyone would get to see on Saturday. The
skies opened and the rain set in. Instead of calling the race the
decision was made by Buddy Boozer and Faye Allan to finish up
eliminations Sunday. At 12:15 Sunday the engines fired up and we were
back to racing.
Two racers got bye runs into the semifinals do to their competitors
not being able to make the call. First was Tommy Mauney because Bill
DeSoto hurt his engine. Ric Fleck got the bye run because Steve Bray
couldn’t stay and run on Sunday. Ervin Rose had the tough task of
taking on Shay Loveday. Shay posted the quickest time of this round
with a 4.069 at 178.00 to Ervin’s 5.033. Next up it was the battle of
the Jordans, Troy and Dennis. Dennis got the win light with a 4.118 at
176.12 to Troy’s 4.137 at 178.00.
In the sport of drag racing the quickest car doesn’t always win. Ric
Fleck used a hole shot to get the win over Dennis Jordan. Ric left the
line first with a .047 light to Dennis’ .054 and his 4.183 at 176.82
was enough to hold off Dennis’ 4.147 at 160.77. Setting in the staging
lanes behind Dennis and Troy was Tommy Mauney and Shay Loveday. It was
a classic Nitrous vs. Blower race. Shay had lane choice and stuck to
the same lane that he had been running all day, the left lane. Shay
left the line first but he didn’t have enough to hold off the Blown
Ford. Tommy got by Shay with 4.025 at 181.31. Shay posted a 4.100 at
176.74.
The final round was set. Tommy Mauney driving Danny Blankenship’s
Blown ‘40 Ford and Ric Fleck in his twin Pro Charged Corvette. After
the two did their burnouts, their teams put them on the line. The tree
activated and it was Ric with a slight advantage. Ric put up a 4.139
at 178.00 but Tommy posted the best time of the race with a 3.9600 at
183.90 to get the win.
Ric Fleck was very gracious in defeat and said, “We got another
runner-up but we are right on the edge of getting a win. We are taking
baby steps right now. We finally got the car working, got the chassis
working to where we could get a little bit of power out of the motor.
Now we’re going back to the chassis to see if we can get more out of
it. We have a lot left on the table. This motor is making tons of
power. We ran a 4.09 a couple of weeks ago and the car has been
consistently running in the low teens since then.”
“I want to thank Darrel Makins from Under Pressure Paerformance,”
continued Ric “He has been doing a great job tuning the car. Also, I
want to thank Pro Charger for their support. If it wasn’t for them, we
wouldn’t be able to do this. I also want to thank Cameron at Cameron’s
Torque Converter Service. He does an awesome job on our Powerglides
and Converters. I want to say thanks to my crew chief Devin Barrick,
my crew, Mike Ellis, Chris Krug and Charley Dooley. My family was all
down here with us today. My brother n law Dave Eddy and his son Dane
were down her all week helping us work on the car. We had to change a
blower in between rounds and they all pitched in and helped. It’s a
team effort. The Quick 8 Outlaws are a heck of a group and I am very
happy to be part of them. Congratulations to Danny and Tommy for the
job that they did all weekend. A 3.96 with a powerglide in the heat of
the day is very impressive. A .960 sixty foot in the heat of the day
is getting it done. So hats off to those guys and that gives us
something to shoot for.”
“Well we closed the deal and got us a win today.” Blankenship said
“We’ve had the car to beat several times this year with the Ford and
Willys and something always happened. We’ve put up a lot of strong
numbers all year and today we saved the best for last. We ran a 3.960
in the heat in the finals. I guess that this car loves the heat. When
it’s super hot outside it seems to perform best. I want to thank Tommy
Mauney for building a great race car and driving for me this weekend.
Also, a big thanks to my crew Jimmy Lee, Robbie Sapp, Bruce Woodcock,
Chris Wooten and my whole family. I am very glad to see my son Patrick
back helping me. I want to thank Buddy Boozer, Faye Allan and Bob and
Gina Myers. With out them we couldn’t do this.”
“I appreciate Danny letting me drive his car,” commented Tommy “The
Quick 8 Outlaws have a good club and put on a good show. I’ve been to
a couple of them and it is always good. Thanks to all the guys that
Danny has working him for doing a good job. It’s just a good deal. I
want to thank my wife Karen for letting me do this all these years.
She and Chris and have put up with this for a lot of years.”

Shay Loveday
and Team Eagle Performance Win Coastal Plains

Shay Loveday and his Eagle Performance 63 Vette
Was on a roll this Saturday at Coastal Plains
in Jacksonville NC. They got down the track every round but 1
when they had transmission problems.
After a quick change it was right back to work.
In the final Round it came down to Shay and Troy Jordan in the Blade
Runner Motorsports Blown Vette.
Classic Nos vs Blower. Both cars leave together on the line and
Troy has Transmission Problems and it blows threw the bands while
Loveday goes a 4.13 after a transmission change.
All the teams were working hard on getting their cars down the track
but the Eagle Performance Team came out on Top! Congrats To Shay
and his crew.
